Maggie Bailey, 2009 National Watermelon Queen

(Feb. 23, 9:33 a.m.) Maggie Bailey, the 2009 National Watermelon Queen candidate representing the states of Illinois and Indiana, won the national crown Feb. 21 in Charleston, S.C., and will promote watermelon for the next year, Stephanie Simek, marketing and communications manager of the National Watermelon Promotion Board, Orlando, Fla., said in an e-mail.

The daughter of Gina Bailey lives in Terre Haute, Ind., where she attends Indiana State University, Bailey is an elementary education major and plans to earn a master's degree in counseling, according to the Indiana Watermelon Association.
