(March 14, 1:45 p.m., PACKER WEB EXCLUSIVE) David Murdock, owner of Westlake Village, Calif.-based Dole Food Co. Inc., is granting $2 million to the North Carolina Research Campus to assist in the development of healthier fruits and vegetables.

The Kannapolis, N.C.-based campus will work in conjunction with North Carolina State University faculty members to discover more nutritious produce items, and Murdock’s $2 million — in addition to $1 million from the Distinguished Professors Endowment Trust Fund — is expected to establish endowments that will pay for three distinguished professorships and three new faculty positions during the 2008-09 fiscal year, according to an article in the Winston-Salem Journal.

The three staff positions will be in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, the article said.
