(Oct. 6) SALINAS, Calif. — Consumers interested in learning to eat better not only got suggestions from Steven Pratt’s book, they also got introduced to some of the companies that produce those healthy fruits and vegetables.

At this month’s Produce Marketing Association convention in Anaheim, attendees will get to meet Pratt, co-author of “SuperFoods RX: Fourteen Foods That Will Change Your Life” and get free autographed copies.

Introduced in February, the book has more than 200,000 copies in print.

Seven Mann Packing products are listed in “SuperFoods RX” as healthy and convenient foods, more than any other vegetable brand, said Lorri Koster, a spokeswoman for Mann.

Mann has worked with the book’s publisher on promotions since late spring, Koster said.

“I think the promotions have been very well received by the trade,” she said. “It’s an out-of-the-box promotion, teaming up with a best-selling book. And I think it has been good for consumers, too.”

Throughout the past year, Mann has launched national in-store recipe distribution programs, online promotions via its Web site and the SuperFoods RX Web site and a direct mail campaign to its consumer database that ties into the book.

Pratt is a senior staff ophthalmologist at Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla. In his book, Pratt argues that some foods are better than others, and that companies such as Mann make it easy to eat those products by selling them cut, washed and ready to eat.

“SuperFoods RX is based on a simple but profound premise: some foods are dramatically better than others for our health and longevity,” Pratt said in news release.

“Sure, everyone knows that an apple is a better snack than potato chips, but do you know that a daily handful of walnuts or a bowl of blueberries can actually improve your well being and longevity?”
