(June 18) STOCKTON, Calif. — Diamond of California, Stockton, Calif., has begun promoting nuts as a healthful snack or ingredient with the introduction of new packaging for its most popular product, shelled walnuts.

Set for release in early summer, the new design, meant to show the high level of omega-3 fatty acids in walnuts, will include a flag indicating that each serving provides 2.5 grams of the fatty acid.

Omega-3 fatty acids can help lower cholesterol; protect against heart disease, stroke and some cancers; ease arthritis and other inflammatory diseases; and even fight certain mental illnesses, according to a news release.
