(Oct. 29) Publix Super Markets Inc., Lakeland, Fla., is taking organics to another level — the whole store.

The chain has opened the first of its GreenWise Markets in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., extending its GreenWise brand of natural and organic products.

To help shoppers distinguish between organic, all-natural and conventional items, the stores use color-coded tags.

In the produce aisle, the stores will offer touch-screen electronic scales for produce weighing before checkout. The produce departments also feature a dedicated organic processing area.

The 39,000-square-foot Palm Beach Gardens store has nearly 5,000 feet of prepared foods, which include entrees and side dishes, custom salads, sandwiches, and salad and soup bars.

In 2008, Publix — one of the country’s largest supermarket chains — plans to open other Florida GreenWise Markets in Boca Raton, Vero Beach and Tampa.
