(July 8, 5:12 p.m.) A refrigeration leak closed the San Antonio Produce Terminal Market for about three hours late Sunday night, but caused no long-term disruption in business.

About 20 employees on the market were evacuated after an ammonia leak from a refrigeration system at Big State Produce Co. was reported to the San Antonio fire department around 9:30 p.m. on July 6.

Roy Mendez, owner and president of Big State Produce, said the leak was minor and has been remedied.

“Our main concern was the other people in the market and disrupting their business, but luckily it happened on Sunday night,” Mendez said.

Tom Preston, terminal market manager, said the leak did not disrupt business and the evacuation was cleared by 1 a.m. on July 7.

“At our market, like most, workers don’t come in until 2-3 in the morning,” he said. “It didn’t affect the operation of the market at all.”
