Gilroy, Calif.-based Uesugi Farms is increasing supply of place-packed green and red bell peppers this year.

“We’re going to get a little more aggressive with our premium peppers,” co-owner Pete Aiello said. “We hope at a minimum to double our volume on place-packed, maybe even triple it. For the past few years we’ve had more demand for that product than we could meet. This year, when our salesmen traveled around and met with retail customers, they reiterated their need. So we did something about it.”

Those bell peppers are packed by hand rather than machine. The gentler touch has made a difference for sales, Aiello said.

Uesugi Farms has sourced bells from various regions, but most production is in Bakersfield, Gilroy, Hollister and Brentwood.
