For DNE World Fruit Sales, Fort Pierce, Fla., and others, bags are in, boxes are out.

“Clementines are now mostly packed in 15-kilogram Euro trays for bagging, with very little emphasis on the 5-pound box compared to previous years,” said Matt Gordon, Chilean program manager for DNE.

Chilean clementine packaging should be similar to past seasons for Vancouver, British Columbia-based The Oppenheimer Group, with 2- and 3-pound mesh bags with overwraps carrying the load, said James Milne, the company’s citrus category director.

“Probably 90% will be 2- and 3-pound bags,” he said. “It’s fairly consistent.”

Oppy will pack some fruit in 5-pound gift boxes and 5-pound club store bags. Pouch bags with handles will be an option for smaller fruit, though that option does present problems, Milne said.

“It’s not the easiest to pack,” he said. “It adds an extra layer of costs.”

Mark Greenberg, president and chief executive officer of Capespan North America LLC, St. Laurent, Quebec, also expects the status quo to remain in effect this season when it comes to packaging.

“Almost all clementines will arrive in 15-kilogram cartons and will be custom-packed to the chain stores’ specification into 3- or 5-pound bags.”

Peter Anderson, imported citrus category manager for Vero Beach, Fla.-based Seald Sweet International, also does not expect a big shift in packaging preferences in this year’s Chilean deal.

“The majority of the fruit will be packaged into 10-by-3-pound or 15-by-2-pound bags, which have become the industry standards,” Anderson said.
