Rocky Ford seeks faster testing

Rocky Ford Growers Association wants to speed results from pathogen tests done at facilities or fields, said Michael Hirakata, association chairman and sales director for Hirakata Farms.

“We’re working with Colorado State University and some private companies to figure out an easy way to do it and have that quicker turnaround on our test results,” he said.

Member growers are also working on plant upgrades, he said.

Tuxedo Corn supplies brewery

Tuxedo Corn Co. is providing ingredients for a beer named after its Colorado community, Olathe.

AC Golden Brewing Co., a subsidiary of MillerCoors, makes the lager under the Olathe label from corn, barley and hops grown in the area.

Introduced last year, it’s in limited distribution.

“Their plan was to make Olathe beer with all products grown here,” said John Harold, president of Tuxedo Corn. The company grows barley and hops as well as sweet corn.
