Fresno, Calif.-based Crown Jewels Produce is adding Chile to its pomegranate supply chain.

“Generally we start up in August and finish by December out of California,” Atomic Torosian, managing partner, said in July.

“But in March or April we’ll start bringing up pomegranates from Chile. We opened up an office in Santiago about three months ago so we can stay in front of the retailers.

“We’re trying to be in pomegranates for more like eight months of the year,” he said.

In California, Crown Jewels is in the fourth year of its partnership with grower Steve Barsoom of Ensher Alexander & Barsoom, a 1,000-acre pomegranate operation.
