“The fixed-weight bag is becoming more popular,” said Jared Lane, vice president of marketing for Bakersfield, Calif.-based Stevco Inc.
Louie Galvan, managing partner, Fruit Royale Inc., Delano, Calif., said the 2-pound, fixed-weight bag is popular.
“It’s the only fixed-weight bag we do, and this is our second year of offering that,” he said.
He sees the fixed-weight bag as an alternative to the clamshell.
“It seems the 2-pound clamshell customers are the ones to target for the fixed-weight bag,” he said, mentioning that presenting a fresher-looking product with graphics is the idea.
Still, there are some stores that continue to request the clamshell.
“They are looking for other ways to market the product,” Galvan said.
And, despite the growing trend for the pouch-style handle bag, which is seen by some as a replacement for clamshells, there are other options available.
“Oppy will pack much of our 2014 Mexican grape production in pouch/handle bags. That said, we also plan to pack in RPCs, as well as four 4-pound and six 3-pound clamshells for retailers interested in other options,” said Marc Serpa, director of domestic grapes for The Oppenheimer Group, Vancouver, British Columbia.
