Giumarra succeeds with Angelys pear

“This will be our first real volume season with Angelys pears,” said Jason Bushong, division manager of Giumarra Wenatchee.

“We’re excited with the exceptional, high sugar eating they have this year. We also have some potential new pear varieties coming down the line in the future.”

The bronze-skinned, pink-blushed Angelys was introduced in 2013 when it shipped in limited quantities. Giumarra is the exclusive North American supplier of the fruit grown in New Zealand by Freshmax.

Comice and taylor’s gold started in April and will run through July. Angelys production began at the same time but will run through August, Bushong said.

“This past growing season produced some nice larger sized pears so our volumes are slightly up this season, possibly as high as 10%,” Bushong said.

Other pear exclusives in the summer market include the Papple, marketed by The Oppenheimer Group. It’s a cross between an Asian pear and a red bartlett that resembles an apple.

Apple fruit size out of New Zealand was also up this year.

“But piece count on the trees were down, so overall it’s a slightly lower number on apples than in years past, possibly 10% to 15% down,” he said.

Giumarra Wenatchee is in its fourth season with the Lemonade apple.

“We continue to get great retail support for the apple, especially going into the summer months,” Bushong said.

“Also, we’ll be doing a small run of Diva apples here in the U.S. We’re excited about its potential growth.”

The company expects New Zealand meyer lemon volumes will be anywhere from equal to to 5% up over last year. That fruit starts in the first week of July and extends through September.
