Marketing director Sherise Jones said the series of six grilling events is designed to build national awareness for onions from the region. The university’s six home games are scheduled to be televised nationally, and Jones said the onion marketing group is working mainstream media to build exposure of the competition series through commentary pieces during the games.
For each grill-off, two contestants will face off. Each contestant can have up to three additional team members to assist them in creating a recipe using specific ingredients, which will include USA Onion samples. The other ingredients will be locally produced and selected to complement the flavor of the onions.
Three judges will sample the contestants’ creations and select a winner before kickoff of each game. Winners will receive a custom Weber charcoal grill and national recognition.
Idaho Gov. Butch Otter is scheduled to compete against a surprise contestant at the tailgate contest before the Sept. 28 game between the Boise Broncos and the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles. Jones said other high-profile contestants are being recruited to participate.
