Catering to high-end retailers who like a lot of variety in their displays, Nature Fresh Farms, Leamington, planted new colors of bell peppers this year.
Peter Quiring, founder and president, said new, mildly flavored ivory, brown, purple and lilac shades of bells will be available from Nature Fresh this year, in addition to another pepper variety that is at the opposite end of the heat chart.
The launch this season of the Trinidad Scorpion pepper at Nature Fresh takes the grower-shipper nearer to the top of the Scoville heat scale.
The new pepper’s name matches its appearance. The Trinidad Scorpion is a bright red pepper with a top similar to a bell pepper and a bottom that narrows and often curls, just like a scorpion’s tail with its infamous stinger. On the Scoville scale the Trinidad Scorpion pepper ranks hotter than all culinary peppers, Quiring said.
