October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and several packers, shippers and importers are changing their packaging to pink to highlight the disease.
Karpinski Trucking & Produce, Sunbury, Pa., is working on a program with Susan B. Komen, Dallas, that would promote breast cancer awareness and research and benefit the foundation.
Ralph Diaz, export and import sales manager, said the company has made breast cancer one of its top causes because most people have either been touched by the disease personally or know someone who has.
The packer-importer is such a staunch supporter that it painted all of its packing equipment at its Deerfield Beach, Fla., facility pink.
“I guess you know we support this 1 million percent,” Diaz said of the color scheme.
He said he hopes the program, which will allow Karpinski to use the Komen logo and the pink ribbon on its Peruvian sweet onion bags and cartons, will be finalized by the end of October.
A portion of sales will be donated to the foundation.
But the Sunbury, Pa.-firm isn’t the only one aligning itself with a breast cancer charity.
Hendrix Produce Inc. has partnered with the Frisco, Texas-based National Breast Cancer Foundation to raise awareness.
The Metter, Ga.-based grower-packer and importer plans to redesign its packaging to incorporate the foundation’s logo and pink ribbon during October.
Kevin Hendrix, vice president, said the firm decided on the foundation because of its top rating with Charity Navigator.
“We were looking for a partner that put a lot of funds back into research and programs,” he said.
About 86% of the foundation’s donations go toward programs, according to Charity Navigator.
Bland Farms LLC, Glennville, Ga., has for the past few years packed its Peruvian sweets in pink bags and bins in October to support the New York-based Breast Cancer Research Foundation, sales manager R. Landis Bland said in an e-mail.
“Nearly all of our customers have had great success with our pink bags and bins that can be displayed to show that they, as well as Bland Farms, are committed to breast cancer awareness (and) research,” Bland said.
This will be the fourth consecutive year that Shuman Produce Inc., Reidsville, Ga., has changed the packaging for its Peruvian RealSweet brand onions to pink during October to support the fight against breast cancer, marketing Andy Brady said.
