Mid Isle Farms, Albany, Prince Edward Island, has continued efforts to increase production of a new variety, vales sovereign, salesman Josh Gill said.

The company places a large focus on developing varieties that will taste good for consumers.

One yellow-flesh russet, innovator, has enjoyed success at retail, according to Gill.

The vales sovereign variety is a long potato with pink blemishes.

“It’s a European variety,” Gill said. “We have brought it to North America to test it in our environment here and bring it along to market throughout North America.”

Vales sovereign won the Tesco’s Fresh Produce Variety of the Year award in the fruit and vegetable category in 2008 and has seen continued success since that time, according to Gill

“We’re excited about this, tastewise, and hoping to get it more into the retail level,” Gill said.

The packaging includes information for consumers to teach them about the history of the variety.

Potato board invests in research

The Charlottetown-based Prince Edward Island Potato Board has placed an increased emphasis on research, according to general manager Greg Donald.

With reductions in government funding for research, the growers decided they needed to take a larger role in that arena. The board has been involved before this new commitment to research, but not at this level.

“We’ve always been a part of various efforts across Canada but this is a more organized effort, both nationally and regionally,” Donald said.

Donald mentioned recent research efforts have resulted in new variety trials.

“We continue to look at new varieties under different conditions,” he said. “We’re excited about the future.”
