Bonipak fires up solar energy

Bonipak Produce Inc. completed a 4-acre solar energy project in early March.

“Clean power is a big focus for us, along with sustainability and social responsibility,” said Don Klusendorf, director of sales and marketing for Santa Maria, Calif.-based Bonipak.

“The solar was part of that investment,” he said. “It saves about 33% on traditional energy.”

Fresh Venture Foods expects to grow

Gold Coast Packing Inc. and Babé Farms plan to add about 25,000 square feet to their joint Santa Maria, Calif., processing and shipping facility, Fresh Venture Foods.

The facility opened in December 2012.

“We’re starting to jump through the hoops to get the additional square footage in place,” said Brent Scattini, vice president of sales and marketing at Gold Coast Packing. “We still have to go through the permitting process.”

The expansion would increase total size to about 105,000 square feet, and truck bays from five to 10.

Strawberry vet joins Main Street Produce

Santa Maria, Calif.-based Main Street Produce Inc. has named Steve Circle director of strawberry marketing and sales, a new position.

Circle was previously sales director for Sunrise Growers, Placentia, Calif., where he spent 23 years.

“They closed their fresh strawberry program in December to focus their efforts on their frozen side through Frozsun Foods,” said Paul Allen, owner and president of Main Street Produce. “They’re a subsidiary of Frozsun.”

“I’m going to step off the day-to-day sales desk to help oversee other areas of the company,” Allen said. “I’ve been the sole person selling berries for almost 30 years.”
