Another trend in the push for locally grown produce brings the farm even closer to consumers.
North Carolina-based growers, Leggett Farming Partnership operates two you-pick strawberry markets, Strawberry City in Nashville, N.C., and Airport U-Pick in Elm City, N.C.
“We offer pick-your-own, pre-picked and other local produce, local hand-dipped ice cream, as well as value-added items such as strawberry salsa, strawberry jams and jellies and locally produced honey,” said Sue Leggett, partner.
The two locations are popular for school field trips and family outings. The you-pick markets supply the freshest strawberries available since customers can pick berries off the vine themselves.
“We have some very loyal customers that have been coming for several decades,” Leggett said.
The company also provides berries to smaller, local grocery stores and to several local restaurants for special dishes and desserts.
This year, the company hosted an open house on April 21, at the Strawberry City location.
“We had a record number of people come through, and a lot of new customers,” Leggett said.
The event was marked with activities and games for children, free samples and some special pricing deals.
