Importers of Chilean clementines said bags continue to gain momentum as the package of choice.
“It seems that most retailers have moved away from the 5-pound box during the summer and favor either a 2-pound or 3-pound bag,” said Matt Gordon, Chilean program manager for DNE Fruit Sales, Fort Pierce, Fla.
Once they’re re-packed in bags, fruit is typically packed back into the original 24- x 16-inch trays they arrived in from Chile.
Mark Greenberg, president and chief executive officer of Capespan North America LLC, St. Laurent, Quebec, expects to see more Chilean clementines packed in retail-specific bags this year.
“The industry continues to move away from the (5-pound) gift carton to 2-pound, 3-pound and 5-pound bags, packed to each retailer’s specification,” Greenberg said. “This assures excellent arrival quality and condition and gives retailers and distributors a lot of flexibility.”
Chilean clementines will be packed this season in 2-pound, 3-pound and 5-pound bags, but also in larger packs, said Karen Brux, North American managing director of the Chilean Fresh Fruit Association, Sonoma, Calif.
