Last year, Buffalo Packing, Olathe, Colo., which grows onions for The Onion House LLC, Weslaco, Texas, experimented with 40 acres of an intermediate variety that is expected to be ready in mid-August, about a month earlier than standard long-day onions, said Don Ed Holmes owner of The Onion House.

This year, 100 acres were planted with the variety, said Holmes.

Holmes said he expects to market about 450,000 bags of Colorado-grown onions this season.
