Champion Produce adds storage building

For the second year in a row, Parma, Idaho-based Champion Produce Inc. has added a storage building, said John Wong, sales manager.
The new 8,000-ton storage building brings the company’s on-site storage capacity to 70,000 tons, Wong said.

“We had been light on permanent storage,” Wong said. “This helps us keep up with our current growth.”

The buildings are heated, which allows Champion to dry onions if they’re picked early or during a cold or wet fall, Wong said.

Also new at Champion, the company has hired a salesman and a transportation manager.
Ross Sevy, who has worked at Champion since 2007 as transportation manager and sales assistant, is now a full-time salesman, Wong said.

Kirk Tewalt, who has worked in the heating and livestock industries, is the company’s new transportation manager.

Onion committee continues Web program

For the second year, the Parma, Idaho-based Idaho-Eastern Oregon Committee will participate in the Brand Points Plus online foodservice buying program, said Sherise Jones, the committee’s marketing director.

The committee received a specialty block grant that matches funds to participate in the program, which rewards foodservice buyers for using the system.

Buyer who buy Treasure Valley onions through brandpointsplus.com earn points, which can be redeemed for free kitchenware, electronics, clothing and other items.

The Treasure Valley is the only onion shipper represented on the site, Jones said.

Murakami Produce’s new fans save energy

Energy-efficient fans installed in 2010 by Ontario, Ore.-based Murakami Produce Co. worked so well in their first season, Murakami was named one of Idaho Power’s Top 10 energy savers of the year, said president Grant Kitamura.
