After a seven-year hiatus, the Idaho-Eastern Oregon Onion Festival returned to the Malheur (Oregon) County Fair this month with the support of the Snake River Economic Development Alliance.

Kit Kamo, executive director of the alliance, told the Capital Press before the fair that area growers started pushing for the resurrection of the festival at their annual meeting in February.

Paul Skeen, president of the Malheur County Onion Growers Association, said even though the festival this year was “a bit scaled down” from its past glory, it was a successful event he hopes will become an annual tradition again.

Skeen said Malheur County is the main onion growing region in Oregon. There are about 40 onion packing sheds in the region’s Treasure Valley, with the onion industry estimated to have an annual economic impact of about $1.3 billion.
