Leading up to the 2013 potato harvest, Potandon Produce LLC debuted a merchandising video designed to help retailers turn potato displays into produce aisle centerpieces.
Barbara Keckler, marketing manager for the Idaho Falls, Idaho-based grower-shipper, said the video addresses retailers’ desire to build a more efficient marketing program. Dubbed “Merchandising 101,” the video encourages retailers to stock more varieties of potatoes for maximum consumer appeal.
Potandon also offers retailers assistance with determining traffic patterns and developing plan-o-grams. The company, which is the exclusive provider of potatoes for the Green Giant label, also stresses the importance of display maintenance. Proper rotation, cleanliness and attractive display fixtures are crucial to attract and maintain consumers’ attention, according to the Potandon website.
Southwind medley packs include new variety
A new variety of fingerling has joined the specialty spuds grown at Southwind Farms, Heyburn, Idaho.
Robert Tominaga, president and co-owner, said the Tri-State Potato Research and Breeding Program developed the variety, known as the amorosa. It is a red-skinned fingerling with reddish-pink flesh.
Southwind has limited quantities of the amorosa fingerlings for the 2013-14 season, Tominaga said.
The company plans a limited introduction of the amarosas by including them in their medley packs beginning this year.
Southwind plans to increase plantings of amarosas with the intent of having them available for retailers in a year or two, Tominaga said.
