Mexican grapes business update briefs

Del Monte Fresh set for Mexican grape deal

Sales and quality assurance representatives from Coral Gables, Fla.-based Del Monte Fresh Produce NA will be in Nogales, Ariz., during May and June to handle the company’s 2012 Mexican table grape crop.

“We are looking forward to a good season as a result of good weather and growing conditions that we expect will bear a bountiful crop,” said Dennis Christou, vice president of marketing.

The season should start the first or second week of May, and the company will work with the same Mexican grape growers as it has done in recent years, he said.

Fruit Royale opens office in Riverside

Fruit Royale Inc., Delano, Calif., has opened an office in Riverside, Calif., to “broaden exposure on the West Coast,” said Louie Galvan, managing partner.

The office was opened to help the company handle its West Coast Chilean grape deal, which was new this year.

The firm previously sold Chilean grapes only on the East Coast.

The office will remain open year-round with Joe Cardenas, most recently with The Giumarra Cos., Los Angeles, handling sales.

Hermosillo growers host Sonora summit

The Hermosillo Grape Growers Association will play host to its annual Spring Sonora Summit on April 26-27 at the Royal Palace Hotel in Hermosillo, Mexico.

Grape growers, buyers, distributors and members of government and private organizations attend the annual event, which will feature a tour of vineyards, dinner at a vineyard and conferences at the hotel on safety programs, markets, certifications, harvest estimates and a motivational talk.

MAS Melons & Grapes hires Tokyo salesman

Rio Rico, Ariz.-based MAS Melons & Grapes has hired a salesman for its Tokyo office.

Kei Funakubo, who previously worked for a Japanese trading company, handles sales of broccoli, avocados, asparagus and kabocha squash, said owner Miguel Suarez.

Three existing customers also have expressed interest in the firm’s grape program. The firm has operated MAS Produce Japan for about 10 years.

Pacific Trellis Fruit adds to sales staff

Greg Murray, previously working out of Philadelphia for Los Angeles-based The Giumarra Cos., has joined Pacific Trellis Fruit, Reedley, Calif., as a salesman, said Dirk Winkelmann, international business development director.

Murray will work out of the Pacific Trellis office in Gloucester City, N.J.

The company expects to ship about 1 million boxes of grapes from Mexico this season.

Stevco brings on sales manager

Jason Fuller, most recently with Castle Rock Vineyards, Delano, Calif., has joined Los Angeles-based Stevco Inc. as sales manager, said Jared Lane, vice president of marketing.

Stevco is a major player in the Mexican table grape deal, Lane said, and should ship 1.6 million boxes of perlette, flame, sugraone, red globe, black, princess and other varieties from Mexico this season — an increase of about 10% over last year.

The company’s Mexico program should start around May 1, about five to seven days earlier than usual, he said.

Sun World International to offer clamshells

Sun World International LLC, Bakersfield, Calif., plans to offer 2-, 3-, and 4-pound clamshells of red, green and black grapes this season, said Rudy Heras, who recently was named category director for Mexican grapes and peppers.

The three-year veteran of Sun World also will continue in his role as a key account salesman.

In all, the company expects to ship 600,000 packages from Mexico this season, most of which will be shipped in June.
