Buurma Farms spruces up radish prep area

Willard, Ohio-based Buurma Farms Inc. has added and updated its radish-cleaning room, said Loren Buurma, co-owner.

“The room has been completely enclosed and refrigerated,” he said, listing all new walls, insulation, flooring, electrical service and ceilings among the improvements.

The new room was opened for use officially the week of May 14, he said.

The company’s radish deal runs through the end of October, with shipments going until around Nov. 10, he said.

Michael Farms builds up its potato lineup

Urbana, Ohio-based Michael Farms is offering grillable russet potatoes and sweet potatoes under its Simply Spuds label, said Todd Michael, vice president.

The products carry retail prices in the $2.49-2.99 range, Michael said.

The grillables made their debut in stores in May, with initial distribution from Illinois to, perhaps, six East Coast retailers, Michael said.

Volume will be “a couple of loads a week,” he said, adding it will generally be available in the peak grilling season, between Memorial Day and Labor Day. But he also said that could be expanded.

The company also offers shrink-wrapped russets and sweet potatoes for microwave “steamable” cooking, Michael said.

Michael Farms also has promotional retail display kits for both lines this year, Michael said.

Wiers Farm Inc. adds hydrocooling space

Willard, Ohio-based Wiers Farm Inc. has upgraded and expanded its packinghouse, including new hydrocooling space for sweet corn and other items, said Jim Wiers, president.

The new facility was on schedule to open in June, he said.

The project carried a cost exceeding $500,000, Wiers said.

The company also is experimenting with a new variety of vine-ripe round tomatoes this year, Wiers said.
