Dole Food Co., with The Dole Berry Co. LLC, Salinas, Calif., hosted the International Berry Health Benefits Symposium from June 18-20, in Charlotte, N.C., according to a news release.
The event featured presentations from scientists on berries’ positive effects on disease prevention.
Keith Mixon, president of Dole Berry Co., and SunnyRidge Farm, Inc., led a North Carolina Berry Research Tour of the David H. Murdoch Research Institute, Kannapolis, N.C.
100 attendees were scheduled to take the tour, according to the release.
According to the event’s website, the tour provided the opportunity to see the high-tech tools used to evaluate the effects of eating berries.
It also included a culinary demonstration to show the uses of berries in healthy menu items.
The tour included a gala dinner, according to the website.
Mixon said Dole’s emergence as a leader in providing berries make hosting the symposium a great honor.
“The partnership also gives us the opportunity to showcase our world-class research facilities at the North Carolina Research Campus,” Mixon said in the release.
As part of Dole’s sponsorship as a host, guests at the event were given Dole Brainberries.
Brainberries are Dole’s line of pre-washed blueberries in a snack-sized pack.
Blueberries were a good fit for the symposium because they have been shown to provide cardiovascular health and have been linked to reversing age-related memory loss and better skin quality, according to the release.
