Watsonville, Calif.-based strawberry grower-shipper Beach Street Farms increased its acreage slightly for organic strawberries. It expects to ship more volume this season, said Stephanie Hilton, spokeswoman. She declined to say what volume the company would ship.

Despite the economic downturn in the U.S., the demand for organic strawberries has remained consistent, and has even grown during the past two years, she said.

“There’s a solid base of demand for organic produce that’s certainly grown over the years,” Hilton said.

“It’s a base that’s not affected by some economic issues that have affected other consumers.”
