DeBruyn adds capacity, opens Florida facility

Zeeland, Mich.-based DeBruyn Produce is making changes to its onion operations.

“We have expanded down here so that we can do consumer packs,” said Margret DeBruyn, president.

DeBruyn took over management of the company following the death of her father, Robert DeBruyn, last fall.

“We added machinery so we can do stickered onions for our sweet onions and consumer bags here in our shed,” she said. “My dad really just did more of the bulk bags.”

The company also relocated its accounting office to its Weslaco, Texas-based operation and upgraded its software.

The company also plans to open a warehouse in Florida with two Florida-based salespeople.

“That will be covering our Florida deal and shipping onions to East Coast operations,” she said. “We’ll be pretty much year round in sweet onions.”

Rio Queen Citrus set to launch Web site

Mission, Texas-based Rio Queen Citrus Inc. is putting the finishing touches on its new Web site, www.texas1015.com.

The Web site has information about onions and features the story of the Texas 1015 onion.

“It’s not 100% complete yet, but we are getting there,” said Mike Martin, president.

The site has sections that explain the difference between Texas fresh onions and winter storage onions, frequently asked questions, nutrition information and recipes.

Go Texan plans retail demonstrations

The Texas Department of Agriculture’s Go Texan local produce program plans to do in-store demonstrations across the state featuring Texas-grown produce.

“We are still working with the major retailers, such as H-E-B, Wal-Mart, Safeway, United, Kroger and others,” said Richard De Los Santos, marketing coordinator. “As we get closer we will have a better list of participating retailers.”

De Los Santos said demos will include onions, squash, peaches, blueberries, strawberries, corn, cantaloupes, honeydews and more.
