Autumn Glory makes debut for Superfresh Growers

YAKIMA, Wash. — A new premium variety making its debut for Domex Superfresh Growers in 2011.

The Autumn Glory will only feature about 5,000 cartons this year but has a promising future based on consumer taste tests and early feedback from the market place, said Loren Queen, marketing and communications manager for Yakima, Wash.-based Domex Superfresh Growers,

“It is definitely an apple worth getting behind,” Queen said. “We’re looking forward to seeing that apple take off in the next several years as we get much larger volumes.

The apple, in development for a decade, is a very sweet and firm apple, he said. It is a bicolor cross between the fuji and golden delicious, with a red appearance and a yellow background. The apple will be introduced to a limited retail base in the 2011-12 marketing season.

“Rather than just pure sweet, it is sweet with a bit of spice too,” he said. The variety stores very well and holds pressure. Harvest is expected to begin in mid-October and marketing of the variety is tentatively anticipated toward the beginning of the new year.

Superfresh Growers will feature a quick-response code on the packaging of the Autumn Glory and other varieties. The QR code will have a stand-alone website that will give consumer details about variety characteristics, grower information and pictures and video of harvest and packing of the variety.
