For every case of Opal apples sold this year, Yakima-based FirstFruits Marketing plans to make a contribution to a non-profit organization encouraging kids to grow gardens and serve the needy.

Opal apples, a cross between golden delicious and topaz varieties, are grown exclusively by Broetje Orchards in Washington State, and distributed in the U.S. exclusively by FirstFruits Marketing.

The charitable contribution will be made to Katie’s Krops, a non-profit organization that encourages kids to tend local gardens and serve the underserved populations in their communities, according to the release. Grants will be awarded to kids who submit essays in markets where Opal is sold. The grant covers the expenses required to create gardens during prime growing season.

“We are proud to partner with Katie’s Krops. This non-profit embodies the spirit of our mission at FirstFruits Marketing,” Andy Tudor, director of marketing for First Fruits Marketing said in the release.
