Okray upgrades all storage facilities

Okray Family Farms, Plover, Wis., has upgraded all seven of its storage facilities with improved humidity and temperature control systems, said president Dick Okray. The buildings previously had temperature and humidity controls, Okray said, but the systems were not integrated. The new systems can be managed remotely on a mobile device.

Okray also has replaced a 28-year-old sizing machine with new Hagan equipment that will improve sizing capability and also grade for color and defects. Okray said the new machine also should be able to handle more volume than the machine it replaced.

RPE Inc. expands Old Oak Farms line

Bancroft, Wis.-based RPE Inc. launched its Old Oak Farms product line last year at PMA Fresh Summit with red, gold and russet potatoes. More recently, the company has added a full line of onions, along with Old Oak
Farms signature flavor potato packs, including Willow Creek Gold, Cherry Creek Red and Honeysuckle Gold.

“Each of these varieties has unique traits and premium flavors that have really been a generation in the making,” said Randy Shell, vice president of marketing and new business development. “Our agronomy team is
continuously growing and testing new and innovative varieties, and these three have outperformed the rest, winning taste panels and achieving great feedback from growers in the past few years.”

Growers association updates retail resources

The Wisconsin Potato & Vegetable Growers Association, Antigo, is seeking input from retailers as the association updates its store kits, said Dana Rady, director of promotions, communication and consumer education.

“We’re talking to retailers because we want to know what works,” she said. “We don’t want to send materials that aren’t going to go up in the stores.”

Rady said updated kits could include bins, posters, recipes, tear pads, grower information and other point-of-sale materials. She said the association expects to have items ready for retailers in October.
