Carlos Solf, director of procurement for Southern Specialties, Pompano Beach, Fla., accepted an award from Santiago-based LAN Cargo. Southern was LAN's largest freight import customer in 2009.

For the third straight year, Southern Specialties is the largest freight import customer of Santiago-based LAN Cargo, said Charlie Eagle, Southern’s vice president of business development.

The company won the award because of the large amount of South American asparagus it brings into the U.S. on LAN airplanes.

In 2009, Southern Specialties accounted for about 20% of the 15 million cases of South American asparagus imported nationwide, and 80% of that was transported by LAN, Eagle said.

The company ships asparagus and other specialty produce grown in South America, Central America, Mexico, Canada and the U.S.
