FreshPoint Connecticut repacks more tomatoes

FreshPoint Connecticut, a wholly owned subsidiary of Houston-based Sysco Corp., in 2013 repacked about four times the tomato volume it had done in 2012, said Ken Yandow, president.

“We just continue to look for new innovative concepts and we’re always looking for products that are going to complement the products we currently have for our customer base,” Yandow said.

Yandow declined to disclose specific volume figures. Most of the product, he said, is bound for foodservice users.

 

Partnership changes at M&M Farm Produce

Hartford, Conn.-based tomato repacker M&M Farm Produce Inc. had a change in leadership in 2013, as two of four partners in the company sold their interests to the other two, said Steve Porter, a partner and now chief executive officer.

Frank Musto and Ken Milio sold their interests in January to Porter and Dave Makas, who now is vice president.

Musto retained his involvement in a seasonal wine grape business, which is separate from the produce operation, Porter said.

“Really, the transition was smoother than it sounds,” Porter said.

He and Makas had bought into the company and become partners about two years earlier, Porter said.

M&M also is plans to install a tomato line in 2014, said salesman Kyle Herchenroder.

“Although we’re a full-line distributor, tomatoes are our primary commodity,” Herchenroder said.

 

Heart of the Harvest sales require hiring

Hartford, Conn.-based fresh-cut company Heart of the Harvest expanded in 2013, said Bill Driscoll Sr., president.

“We took 20 more people on in preparation,” Driscoll said.

The move was a response to increased sales, he said.

There was some physical expansion, too, Driscoll said.

“We bought two multipack packages for the snack packs for the schools, so we have a line going with four now,” he said.

Heart of the Harvest distributes fresh-cut fruits and vegetables to schools and other distributors, Driscoll said.
