West Mathison, president of Stemilt Growers, was named board president for the Washington State Horticultural Association at its annual meeting in Yakima, Wash.

He succeeds John Verbrugge, vice president of Wapato, Wash.-based Valley Fruit, according to a news release. The meeting was Dec. 6-8.

Mathison, 34, served most recently as WSHA’s first vice president. His uncle, Bob Mathison, was president in 2001.

The Mathison family has owned and operated Stemilt since 1964. West Mathison succeeded his grandfather and company founder, Tom Mathison, as president in 2005.

Mathison will continue serving on the Eastern Washington Governor’s Advisory Council.
