(Feb. 29, 10:29 a.m.) The California Strawberry Commission, Watsonville, wants to ensure its industry is producing the most dependable strawberries possible.

Therefore, it and the Postharvest Technology and Information Center at the University of California-Davis, are offering a free Web seminar focusing on the postharvest handling of strawberries throughout the supply chain at 9 a.m. Pacific time on April 15, said Peggy Dillon, public relations spokeswoman.

“Our top priority, as a commission, is food safety, so we want to be able to educate as many people in as many areas to make sure we have the safest and most wholesome strawberries down the line to the consumer,” Dillon said.

The 90-minute session will touch on four topics, consisting of food safety best practices; how to minimize postharvest loss; safe handling practices throughout the supply chain and ways to enhance consumer satisfaction and facilitate repeat purchases, Dillon said.

Six speakers will expand on the four subjects, and they are:

  • Chris Christian, vice president of trade and nutrition for the California Strawberry Commission;


  • Jim Gorny, executive director of the UC-Davis Postharvest Technology Research and Information Center;


  • Elizabeth Mitcham, cooperative extension specialist at UC-Davis;


  • Trevor Suslow, cooperative extension specialist at UC-Davis;


  • Jim Thompson, cooperative extension specialist at UC-Davis; and


  • Rick Tomlinson, director of government affairs for the commission, Dillon said.

Each participant will be registered in a random drawing for a complimentary trip and tour of major strawberry growing regions in California, Dillon said.
