(Dec. 11) Sun World International LLC, Bakersfield, Calif., has donated $30,000 to assist victims of an Aug. 15 earthquake in Peru.

Sun World’s president, Bruce Burton, and its senior vice president of sales and marketing, Mike Aiton, presented a check to Peru’s agriculture minister, Ismael Benavides Ferreyros, during a visit in late November to Peru.

The funds will help rebuild the agricultural communities of Ica, Chincha and Pisco, which were the hardest hit by the earthquake.

No fields or vineyards suffered damage from the earthquake, but some industry buildings were damaged, Aiton said. The biggest effect has been on labor, he said, as many farm workers were displaced by the earthquake.

Sun World imports three varieties of grapes from Peru in the fall and minneolas, navels and other citrus in the spring, and the company hopes to add other commodities in the future, Aiton said.
