(Dec. 28) Sunfresh Farms Ltd., Edmonton, Alberta, has a new chief executive officer, a new warehouse and a plan to expand value-added produce.

Dean Seeger joined the company as chief executive officer just before its move to a 55,000-square-foot warehouse in September. The new facility will allow it to produce more value-added products, including peeled potatoes, carrots, cut fruit and vegetables, chopped romaine and salads, Seeger said.

Seeger left The Grocery People Ltd., Edmonton, in July with intentions of joining Sunfresh. He was manager of produce purchasing for Grocery People since 1999.

Seeger got his start in produce as a grocery store manager for various independent stores and for corporate IGA stores 32 years ago. He then became produce manager for the company that owned IGA at the time, the Oshawa Group. The Oshawa group was bought by Sobey’s Inc., Stellarton, Nova Scotia, in 1998, and Seeger continued as produce manager for the company’s Edmonton warehouse.

“Sunfresh is a young company and it’s growing very quickly,” Seeger said. “We’ll be moving into processing as well as wholesale produce.”

Sunfresh is a grower-owned company that markets local and imported produce, including rutabagas, carrots, green cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, peppers, tomatoes and cucumbers.

“My goal is to take Sunfresh Farms from a very good company to a great company,” Seeger said.
