(Oct. 15) When Britain’s largest retailer, Tesco PLC, opens its first U.S. stores Nov. 8 in Southern California, it will offer many consumers a new way of buying their fresh produce and other food items.

But what effect, if any, Tesco’s Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market stores will have on the grocery and produce industries as a whole remains to be seen, industry analysts said.

Some, like Ed Odron, a Stockton, Calif.-based produce marketing consultant, foresee a big effect — at least in California, which could be home to almost half of the 100 U.S. stores the chain plans to open.

Others aren’t as convinced.

“Overall, the impact is going to be relatively small because we’re only talking about a handful of stores with only 10,000 square feet,” said retail analyst David Livingston of DJL Research, Pewaukee, Wis. “Say you have 50 stores at 10,000 square feet — that’s about 2 ½ Wal-Marts.”

But other analysts predict that Tesco — with its emphasis on packaged produce, reusable plastic containers, self-checkout, fast turnarounds, minimal use of refrigeration and other cost-cutting and time-saving measures — could have an effect on how other retailers do business.

“It’s not so much that they’ll be stealing market share, but it will give retailers the freedom they need to do research on new formats to develop themselves,” said Paul Weitzel, a managing partner at retail consulting firm Willard Bishop LLC, Barrington, Ill.

Tesco-like small-format store options already are being explored by retail giants Wal-Mart and Whole Foods, said Dick Spezzano, president of Spezzano Consulting Services, Monrovia, Calif.

“Retailers will watch Tesco very closely,” he said.

Six Fresh & Easy stores are set to open Nov. 8 in Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino counties, according to a Tesco news release.
