(June 30, 3:06 p.m.) LENEXA, Kan. — Managing Editor Greg Johnson has been promoted to editor of The Packer effective July 1.

Lance Jungmeyer resigned as editor and will leave the publication July 1.

Johnson has been managing editor since 2005. He joined The Packer full time as staff writer in May 1996. He has held the roles of assistant markets editor, enterprise (now sections) editor and news editor.

Additionally, copy chief Fred Wilkinson succeeds Johnson as managing editor. Wilkinson joined The Packer in August 1996 as a copy editor.

“Greg is quite capable of leading the editorial team into a new era of Web-first publishing, and I have every confidence that his efforts will play an important role in our success,” said Donald Ransdell, vice president and publishing director of Vance Publishing Corp., Lincolnshire, Ill.

“I look forward to talking with readers and produce industry leaders to find out how The Packer can better serve their business needs both online and in print,” Johnson said.

Jungmeyer started with the publication in 1995 as a Texas beat writer. He became assistant news editor in 1997 and was promoted to news editor in 1998. In 2003, he became managing editor, and in 2005, he was promoted to editor, overseeing a staff of 20.

“The Packer has been a great opportunity to travel the world, learn many things and pursue my calling as a wordsmith,” Jungmeyer said.

His time at The Packer, owned by Vance Publishing, has provided him with many opportunities for professional growth, he said.

“I’ve learned leadership here,” he said. “I’ve had some good mentors — Ben Wood, who was the editor before me, and Robb Bertels, who was the Publisher. I’ve really enjoyed talking with and working with a lot of The Packer legends — people like Tom Karst, Larry Waterfield and Bill O’Neill.”

In his time with The Packer, Jungmeyer has been a key figure, Ransdell said.

“Lance has played a pivotal role in driving the editorial strategy for The Packer,” Ransdell said. “He’s worked tirelessly for The Packer for many years. His dedication and commitment are very much appreciated within Vance, and he will be missed.”

Jungmeyer witnessed the birth of the publication’s Web site in 1997 and the electronic version of The Packer.

Jungmeyer is relocating to Jefferson City, Mo., to become manager of digital communications for the Missouri Department of Conservation, where he will be responsible for the department’s Web site and audio-visual products, he said.
