(April 14, 12:52 p.m.) Steffanie Smith, chief executive officer of River Point Farms LLC, Hermiston, Ore., is being recognized for her work in the produce industry, speaking at the United Fresh Produce Association’s 2008 Reception Honoring Women in Produce.

“It’s certainly an honor to by recognized by my peers and the industry and asked to speak,” Smith said. “It’s humbling and very kind and generous.”

Smith has been in the produce industry most of her life, having gotten her start as a child in her family’s business, Skone & Connors Produce Inc., Warden, Wash.

“I was born and raised in this industry,” she said. “It’s in my blood and I can’t imagine doing anything else. I love my job and what I do.”

She has been chief executive officer for River Point since October 2007, when she joined the company from Taylor Farms Inc., Salinas, Calif., where she was president of the deli/prepared foods division.

Before that, she was co-owner and president of Pacific Pre-Cut Produce, Tracy, Calif., before it was acquired by Taylor Farms.

She is a United Fresh board member, serving as secretary-treasurer, and has been on the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Fruit and Vegetable Industry Advisory Committee.

The reception, which is co-sponsored by Driscoll’s and D’Arrigo Bros. Co. of New York Inc., will take place on Monday, May 5, as part of the association’s annual convention. The convention runs from May 5-7 in Las Vegas.
