The advisory board for the United Fresh Foundation Center for Global Produce Sustainability established four goals at its first meeting.

The Washington, D.C.-based Center for Global Produce Sustainability was established in 2009 with $1.1 million in funding from German chemical and technology company Bayer CropScience.

In a mid-January organizational meeting, the advisory board for the Center for Global Produce Sustainability established four goals:
  • Analyze global issues in sustainability and how they apply to the fresh produce supply chain;
  •  Create a positive vision for successful produce supply chain sustainability, both on an industry level and at the company level;
  • Make sure market-based initiatives on sustainability don’t hinder the industry’s ability to deliver affordable fresh fruits and vegetables to consumers; and
  • Make available information resources and tools to industry members
The 23-member advisory board held its organizational meeting Jan. 17 at the United Fresh Winter Leadership Meetings in Sonoma, Calif. United Fresh President Tom Stenzel said the board represents all members of the supply chain, with growers serving as the “anchor.”

The advisory board plans to meet in conjunction with the United Fresh 2011 convention, May 2-5 in New Orleans.

The advisory board may expand if potential candidates with strong interest and expertise are interested, according to the release. Those interested in serving can contact Victoria Backer, United Fresh senior vice president for member services at (202) 303-3400, ext. 408, or vbacker@unitedfresh.org.
