Washington apple foundation awards young artists

(Sept. 12, PACKER WEB EXCLUSIVE) The Washington Apple Education Foundation, Wenatchee, recognized 16 Washington state students for their entries in the 13th annual Year of the Apple art contest.

Chloe Lyn Johnson of Spokane was named grand prize winner for her oil painting showcasing gala and golden delicious apples. She received a $1,000 savings bond and her artwork will be published on the 2009 Dow AgroSciences calendar, according to the release. Dow AgroSciences sponsors the contest.

Winners were named in four categories: calendar, holiday card, best pear and best soft fruit. Each of the artists’ schools was presented with a $100 to purchase art supplies, according to a release.

The foundation, a nonprofit organization funded through donations, promotes educational opportunities, encourages academic excellence and promotes awareness of the values of the Washington tree fruit industry, according to the release.
