(Feb. 20) Well-Pict Inc., Watsonville, Calif., has expanded its berry line with a new late-summer strawberry variety and an expanded organic raspberry program, which it plans to launch at the United Fresh Produce Association’s Expo Las Vegas 2008, May 5-7.

The summer strawberries will be shipping this year. They have been bred for longer shelf life than other summer varieties, according to a news release.

Because of retail and consumer demand, the company has added new acreage to expand its organic program. Well-Pict now offers organic raspberries year-round in 6-ounce or 12-ounce clamshells.

Its premium proprietary organic strawberries are available in a new 2-pound pack, along with 1-pound pack and an 8-ounce pack. Also available in the organic program are 6-ounce and 12-ounce packs of blackberries, which should be available from May to July, according to the release.

In its conventional berry program, Well-Pict’s newest design for 4-pound strawberry clamshell has been popular with club and retail stores, according to the release.

The smooth-sided clamshell was designed for improved product protection, reduced shipping costs and the environment. The clamshell provides nearly 35% more unit density, which helps reduce fuel and freight costs, according to the release.
