(Nov. 28) Less than a year after it introduced a fresh fruit bowl, Wendy’s International Inc., Dublin, Ohio, has pulled the item, supplied by Del Monte Fresh Produce NA Inc., Coral Gables, Fla.

The fast-food company dropped the cantaloupe, honeydew, pineapple, red grape and yogurt offering Nov. 1, said Wendy’s spokesman Bob Bertini, after sales lagged.

“It tended to be a product that didn’t meet our expectations because particularly as we got later in the year, we found it to be more of a seasonal product,” Bertini said.

But Bertini and John Loughridge, vice president of marketing for Del Monte Fresh, said the restaurant chain might offer a fresh-cut fruit item on a seasonal basis, although there are no immediate plan to do so.

“We’re definitely lobbying for them to bring it back in the spring or to come up with some alternatives for them,” Loughridge said.

Bertini said Wendy’s plans to introduce new items in its Garden Sensations salad line in 2006. Wendy’s added the salad line in 2002, and he credited its success to spurring other quick service restaurants to enter the salad category.
