HOUSTON — This year’s Houston Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Association Charity Golf Tournament is putting fresh fruits and vegetables on the dinner table for one area organization.
The donations will be in the form of gift cards to area retailers for fresh produce purchases, said Pierre Boucha of Paramount Farms, HFFVA president.
“We’re going to be donating about $1,000 a month for the next 12 months to help supply fresh produce for nutritious meals,” Boucha said.
About 72 golfers registered for the tournament, at The Woodlands May 1.
Lou Palma, executive director of Boys and Girls Country, addressed golfers to give them an idea of the importance of the program for the 100 children at the home. Boys and Girls Country, a privately funded organization, gets food from donations and food banks, Palma said.
“Almost all of our vegetables and fruit are in cans,” he said. “When I visited with our staff to tell them the outcome of this was the opportunity for fresh fruit and vegetables, they were thrilled.”
