SALINAS, Calif. — Construction of 16,000 square feet of refrigerated storage space at Mann Packing Co. is expected to be complete by late May, said Lorri Koster, vice president of marketing. It’s the fifth expansion in five years at Salinas-based Mann Packing’s Hansen Street facility. Koster credits it in part to success in the foodservice business. “Foodservice sales are strong,” she said. “Our Arcadian Harvest petite whole leaves product is being very well received by the trade. We’re excited to get that going and growing up here as we expand our Salinas deal.” “The retail portion of our business is leaning more toward private labels,” Koster said. “We’ve been able to adapt to that shift and the changing marketplace.” In March, Mann Packing Co. began shipping a new product, brussels sprouts, as well as a reformulated blend of its Rainbow Salad. The brussels sprouts come trimmed and washed in a microwaveable 12-ounce bag. The Rainbow Salad adds a fourth ingredient, mini-broccoli florets, to the shredded carrots, cabbage and cauliflower mix. It too comes in a 12-ounce bag. Consumer testing showed a 90% preference for the new blend, according to Mann Packing. The latest expansion adds 16,000 square feet of refrigerated raw product storage, shortening harvest to cooling time. In the prior Hansen Street expansion, Mann Packing opened a 12,000-square-foot picking operation warehouse expansion with space for 800 pallets. Facility and product upgrades haven’t been the company’s only focus. “We brought in Christine Keller a year ago as our director of marketing innovation,” Koster said.
