Chelan Fresh Marketing, which expects to start shipping cherries about June 10, looks forward to increased production of some varieties and continued strong performance from a new convenience pack in 2014.
Chelan, Wash.-based Chelan Fresh expects its Washington season to run through mid-August, according to a company news release.
Chelan Fresh has boosted production of the Orondo Ruby variety in 2014, Mac Riggan, the company’s marketing director, said in the release.
The Orondo Ruby, introduced by Chelan Fresh in 2012, should ship from about June 20 to early July, Riggan said. The white-flesh variety combines high sugars with high acids and ships well.
Chelan Fresh also expects to ship more rainiers this year, Riggan said. The company should ship about 300,000 packs in 1.25-pound pouch bags and clamshells.
Chelan Fresh’s 2014 season also will feature a promotion with Disney featuring tie-ins on 2-pound poly bags and 1-pound clamshells.
“Both packages will feature temporary tattoos for kids,” Riggan said. “The tattoos come in four sets of two and change during the season.”
The theme of the tattoos is “Mickey and Friends.”
To guard against rain damage this season, Chelan Fresh will have access to 12 helicopters to protect orchards, Riggan said. The helicopters’ rotors create an umbrella of low-speed air over trees, he said.
