Restaurant chains continue to enroll in the National Restaurant Association’s Kids LiveWell children’s healthy eating initiative.
Launched in 2011, the program is attracting national chains and independent operators, according to the restaurant association.
“The tremendous response and excitement for Kids LiveWell is evidence of the industry’s commitment to providing healthful meal options for children,” Dawn Sweeney, the Washington, D.C.-based association’s president and chief executive officer, said in a news release. “We look forward to the continued growth of the program over the next year.”
The association started the initiative in collaboration with Healthy Dining, an online database — www.healthydiningfinder.com — that allows consumers to search for restaurants with healthy options.
“It has been an outstanding two years for Kids LiveWell,” Anita Jones-Mueller, Healthy Dining’s president and founder, said in the release. “We applaud the participating restaurants’ commitment and their chefs’ dedication to developing innovative and healthful menu options for children.”
The restaurant association showcased Kids LiveWell, which began with 19 restaurant brands representing 15,000 locations, at the BlogHer convention in late July in Chicago.
Participating restaurants agree to offer, promote and identify a selection of menu items that meet qualifying criteria, including limits on sodium, fats and sugar. They must contain a serving of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean protein or low-fat dairy.
