Valencia, Spain-based Laser Food’s Laser Mark labeling system won the Best European Environmental Project prize at a recent awards ceremony, according to a Laser Food news release.
Laser Mark was recognized as a cost-effective, eco-friendly alternative to paper labels. The system removes the pigment from a miniscule area of fruit surfaces, then applies contrasting liquid, which allows producers to inscribe almost any form of logo on the fruit.
The process is all-natural and doesn’t damage the fruit’s exterior or interior.
In 2013, the European Union approved the iron oxides, hydroxides and other materials used in the fruit skin depigmentation process.
In addition to adding brand names, shippers can put QR matrix codes on product using Laser Mark.
