Lance Jungmeyer, The Packer’s editor-in-chief, traveled to Chile and visited Santiago-based Copefrut in early December to check out the firm’s cherry crop and packing operation. Cherry harvests began Nov. 11 and ended Dec. 22, and Copefrut shipped 222,376 cases to the U.S. this season. Copefrut was given an award by the Vial Espantoso Foundation, which annually recognizes one Chilean firm for being worker friendly and including employees in the decision-making process.
